Thanks for the suggestion, but nope!

chmod 4755 /usr/bin/xsane

Gimp User: "Error during device I/O"
Gimp Root: "You are using XSane as Root - this is really dangerous etc..."
(Continue at own risk... OK)
...And it works!

chmod 0755 /usr/bin/xsane

Argh! I've round a whole load of *rc files for sane and xsane and 
gimp in /root and duplicated them in /home/user with user ownership 
and permissions but to no avail. I also tried:

chgrp users /usr/bin/xsane

But with the results above.

Any more ideas?
