Oh well ;) I've just realised that I may have been quite thick - the
permission problems are most likely on the device that XSane is trying
to open. If it was /dev/scanner (for example), look to see what group
it's in and add your user to that group. The group will probably need
read/write access to the device.

You'll need to logout and log back in to get in the group - running
'groups' at the cli will tell you what groups your user is a member of.
