It's a bit difficult to understand your request without having a look 
at what it is that you might be doing.  

 If "they" have a separate modem which they use to connect to the net 
whilst your own systems are switched off then it should be fine.   
However,  any internal network which has more than one connection to 
the net - such as a modem at each end - is a security risk.   More 
than one University has or have records which show that this is the 
way that things are.   You should remove the second modem.   I 
attended a Manlug meeting a couple of years ago which addressed the 
problem of a married couple having a modem each at home.  They 
destroyed at least four different companies in Manchester with their 
love for each other.  The second modem was finally removed.
