It's not a kernel issue, it's a LILO issue. The system doesn't get as far
as loading the kernel. If the kernel doesn't support your SCSI you would
get the dmesg output (loads of kernel info) but it would halt with a
'can't find root device' error.

LILO has four distinct stages of operation. As it performs each of these
stages it prints a letter of LILO on the console. It's hanging on the last
stage for you. I'll have a google and see what I can find out if nobody
else has sorted you out by then.
