>From my own experience (which isn't that vast), I've found abiword to be
very nice on lower spec machines, as already mentioned though it doesn't
support tables, but is quite stable and combined with gnumeric (a really
good spreadsheet program) they can make up quite a nice office suit.

Evolution is also nice for impressing people (its kind of an outlook
clone for Linux, but it only clones the nice parts!)
