I wrote:

In my efforts to convert our desktop machines to linux, I'm having 
difficulty with the permissions on a network RAID server. There are a 
couple of SAMBA shares set up which need to remain as SAMBA shares for 
compatibility with the remaining Windoze boxes and all the files (which 
will have been created by Windoze machines have permissions set to 755. So 
far, I've been spectacularly unable to change this and make my linux boxes 
able to write to or create files.

I should add that all the files and directories are owned by group 'root', 
I need them to be owned by group 'users' or at least, have permissions set 
to 757.
