It changes the screen mode (heh ;). If you look up the framebuffer
howto, you'll find a table of VESA screen codes - lots of numbers,
relating to both the resolution and the colour depth. Without a
framebuffer console, you don't get pretty graphics.

vga=788 might work okay.
