Re: [Sheflug] Linux

*Please don't anyone shout at me!!!!***

*Personal opinion only*

Hiya Douglas,
In my opinion people go away from Linux because of the following:

1- Although there are GUI configuration editors, most things need to
use the command line. Linux is built from projects, if there was a central
group to standardise and manage these projects, advise and give guidelines
and perhaps authorise programs.
2- Although I dont like Windows, it is standardized, a single
control panel, although there are attempts in Linux, most of the item
newsgroups etc advice you to edit configuration files, yes this gives
ultimate control but most users want an interface thats set up.
3- And my reason for Linux not being my primary OS, hardware
compatiability, I want to be able to use my hardware with Linux, most of
mine can be except for my scanner and my webcam, which I have asked and
searched for drivers etc but there wont be I dont ever think. Ok when I want
to scan I could go to Windows but id prefer to do everything in one OS and
not mess about.
4- I do not like the way when Linux is installed with most
distrubutions there are to many tools and to many ways of doing things. A
KDE browser and Netscape, for a simple example. Although this gives choice,
for beginners it clogs up the menus and gives the user to much choice.

Is there a Linux distrubution that is basically a clone of windows,
but a proper Linux? Simple control panel to alter settings, logical choice
of programs. A real beginners OS... Then Linux would be taken up by the
masses. Standardisation of the tools, logical ways of completing tasks.

I realise Linux is close, so very close, but I think that something
needs to happen to make a professional HCI OS that anyone can use and also
people need to stop being so prejudiced in the Linux world. If people want
to send HTML emails why not?

        Steve

With all the new developments in Linux, Personally I can see big
differences between early releases and later releases. The new Desktops are
a treat. Why isn't linux being taken up?
