I don't think you are alone in your concerns. I think a distribution like
Debian or RedHat which is aimed at the IT professional (server side, hobbyist
or research and development) will never be palatable to a lot of people.

Stuff like Lindows or Xandros might be what you are looking for. They
standardize on e.g. a single desktop UI. RedHat is attempting to do this
somewhat too.

Fine, they can send them to their AOL "chat rooms" with their AIM buddies.
