Used to do a very similar thing while working on Winblows desktop support. I'd 
know the dialogs inside out, so I just told them what _would_ have happened 
if I had a real windows machine in front of me. It was easier than saying 'I 
can't click the accounts option in Outlook. I don't have outlook. However, 
the problem lies somewhere in SMTP authentication' or similar.

Like you say, the problems are generally network configuration, and thanks to 
(gasp) standards, TCP/IP works pretty much the same everywhere.
