[Sheflug] Downright Weirdness with Mandrake 9.0 Printing

Hello All,

Okay, so I've continued to try to print with Mandrake 9.0 and I'm still
getting nowhere fast. Can anyone help???

(1) I've used http://localhost:631 with CUPS v.1.1.6 to set the remote
printer as lpd://192.168.1.2/lp
(2) I've set the printer type as
HP LaserJet III Series CUPS+GIMP-print v4.2.2 (en)
(3) I've also tried the earlier version of the ppd which does work on
Mandrake 8.2, but doesn't on Mandrake9.0:
HP LaserJet III Series CUPS+GIMP-print v4.2.0 (en)
(4) I've doctored /etc/hosts and /etc/hosts.lpd on the remote host
192.168.1.49 to be aware of the new client, and accept print jobs from
it.
(5) I've now done this procedure on TWO clients, pointing at TWO lpd
print servers... and NEITHER ONE works with Mandrake 9.0. In both cases
I get the message:
"Remote host did not accept control file (115)"
(6) Yet this exact procedure works perfectly under Mandrake 8.2, with
both print servers...

The only thing that I can think of is replacing CUPS 1.1.6 with the
earlier CUPS 1.1.4... but _surely_ this is a red herring, and 1.1.6 will
work just as well.

Please, I'm getting desperate! I searched linuxprinting.org and only
found someone else who had the same problem - but no answer. Any ideas?
