That did it if i set the locale to be gb rather than us whilst running the above
command.  what it changed was

Option         "XkbLayout"          "gb"

In the InputDevice section of  /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

Though this now leaves me with another problem of

The pipe backslash key now doesn't function exactly as described here

Any thoughts on that ?  Though why would you need a pipe symbol if you're using
a gui :-)
