    OH, OK, I thought you were using debian rather than rh8.0

    However, trying that in our RH 8.0 computers with apt, it comes up
with loads of different programs, including different versions of gcc.

    Couldn't you just install gcc from the rpm package? It is
definitely on the CD!

    Possibly not. glibc-devel might be OK, tho'
