Sorry didn't mention that the startx 2> xerrs.log creates a
file called xerrs.log so you can look through the complete log often you
loose a lot of info as the scroll back buffer is lost when you switch to
X.

I this is normal. Though I can't say why.

Did you check the files installed and links?

I'm running debian and gxl is installed in:
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/
libglx.so is a sym link pointing to libglx.so.1.0.4191
