I always thought that AGP was just a PCI bus, but dedicated to the
graphics card ;) (Possibly running slightly faster than the main bus
these days too, I guess). That would explain it, although it's not
necessarily correct.

You can use glxinfo to see what stuff is running in the X server when
you start it. Two lines from mine:

direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: SGI

That means I have 3D hardware acceleration enabled. You should see
something similar - if you get No for direct rendering, or something
about software, it means the module hasn't loaded.
