Aah, a perennial problem this...

What boot loader are you using?

This happened to me the other week and I restored grub folllowing the 
instructions here:

http://www.sorgonet.com/linux/grubrestore/

Worked a treat as we restored a similarly afflicted machine here at work 
on Tuesday.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to do it for lilo but a google of 'lilo 
restore' might indeed be profitable.
