    In terms of general algorithm design, Knuth is the often quoted
reference. For numerical algorithms, well... Numerical Recipes (to be
had freeishly browsing the web) is OK, but the code has shortcomings
(it's suboptimal). And GSL is very nice, but do you still need to wrap
codes to ATLAS or LAPACK (or FFTW)? That was a real pain!!!
