General programming query perhaps not suited to this list but still relevant to all users I think.
Can anybody recommend a good book for algorithim design? I am looking for something that can help
simplify my programming solutions without introducing too much heavy duty maths.
Addison Wesley do one that many people teaching my computer science
degree regarded as essential called simply "Algorithms".
A nice thick book to level off tables in cold student accommodation,
also available on dubious file sharing type networks in PDF format...
can't beat the real thing though.
There's also a nice weighty tome called "Refactoring: Improving the
Design of Existing Code" which might help, again by Addison Wesley.
I'm afraid most algorithms are an excuse for the authors to introduce
heavy duty maths, it seems. Maybe some of the O'Reilly cookbooks might
be more what you are after for general stuff? I know the perl and PHP
ones are fairly friendly.

P.S. Why wouldn't such a question be relevant to the list? Surely if
you're a Linux user in Sheffield, it's relevant?! :) (Said the non-Linux
user...)
