Re: [Sheflug] Re: Gentoo Linux
Sorry if I have started another distro war... It wasn't my intention, I
just really like Gentoo and thought it would be nice if you linked to
it. Did try Debian briefly, but it wasn't for me. You can actually
install binary files in Gentoo too if you don't want to install. There
are certain binary only builds - openoffice-bin for example, and then
there is the GRP (Gentoo Reference Platform) that lets you install most
common packages from a binary optimised for certain processors.
Also Gentoo when used with reasonable optimisation and prelinking does
appear to be running significantly faster than other distros in most
tests. I also build my own binaries and install from them on other
systems and use stuff like distcc and ccache to speed up compiles. I
won't deny that OOo and KDE are two things that take an age to compile
though...
I have learnt more about Linux using Gentoo than any other distro
though. I don't like having too much done for me as that takes away a
certain amount of control from me too... Anyway, just my 2p worth. I am
not fanatical about my distro and still use Red Hat, and Solaris a
little. I also hope to try out a BSD some time soon as I haven't touched
them to date.
I do hope I haven't started a distro war with my post though ;)
