There was an example of printing all the files in a directory with OOo
(linuxtoday.org, or slashdot.org can't remember where), that would do
the conversion to postscript/pdf. 

There is a library to convert Word to Latex (it may have been via RTF
first though), but while trying to find URLS for that, I came across. 
http://wvware.sourceforge.net/, which seems to fit the bill.... Not
really tried it yet but looks promising..
