[Sheflug] Bootup Screen (Part fixed)
Well as I mentioned earlier, tux now appears in the top left of my boot screen until entering runlevel 3.
Im going to look further at the bootsplash issue though to see what else I can find.
As for the video, I haven't really had any major issues with getting x working.
After I compiled the kernel, I simply did an 'emerge nvidia-glx'. This setup both the nvidia driver and the glx (which is a different package).
The relevant kernel options I have set (2.6.1 kernel) are:
Support for framebuffer devices
VESA VGA Graphics Support
Intel 810/815 Support
Use VESA Generalised Timing Formula <- Never seen this one before!
Virtual Framebuffer Support
Console Display Driver support -->
Video Mode Selection Support
Framebuffer Console Support
Logo Configuration -->
Bootup Logo
Standard 224 Color Linux Logo
The biggest thing to remember with nvidia is that you have to recompile/emerge the driver package after every recompile of the kernel; something to do with the nvidia module going A.W.O.L.
After that, grub.conf was the next thing.
The vga=xxx now works (currently set at 838) which works well for my laptop screen. (Wide aspect 1920x1200).
The 'bootsplash' program requires that the Linux Logo be disabled in the kernel configuration and that an initrd name be supplied to the grub.conf or lilo.conf. I don't have any initrd at present.
The Gentoo forum seems to suggest copying an image file of the appropriate size to {initrd.size} in the /boot folder and then adding this as an entry to the bootloader .conf file. I've always personally thought initrd was something that was generated from a kernel compile.
I think to give the bootsplash solution a try, Im going to try and find the Gentoo bootcd splashscreen, and try that, after a so-called 'kernel patch'.
I'll post back on the results of that later.
Steve.
