I have bootsplash running on my Gentoo system. If you emerge a package called bootsplash I believe it comes with a script to generate initrd files from config files on your hard drive. Your best bet though is to follow this guide http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=49036&start=0 I followed it and then with some minor modifications for the 2.6 kernel I learnt about from reading through the forum I got it working.
