Steve when you get your text console see how much space you have left
try.

df -h

check your root partition "/" see if you have space, his can stop X from
starting.

remove any core.* files that have started to appear on your system.



In your XF86Config-4 file located in /etc/X11/ change your driver from
"nvidia" to "nv"

Used debian sarge over the last month building my mythtv box, with a
nvidia card for s-video out, had to compile the kernel with headers and
nvidia drivers as well, as I was using kernel 2.6.6 with DVB support for
skystar2 dvb card that will work with mythtv..


nvidia web site has run time files nvidia-name-of-file.run that some
times work..
