Thanks for all the help.  Managed to track the problem down to a setting in
my bios "AGP 4X" which was set to disabled and had magically become enabled.
Luckily I had made a note of certain settings in the back of the motherboard
manual.  Still took me from 6:30 to 11:30 last night to spot it though!
