Alex,
I assume the bit of plastic that's broke off is the the little lug that the
heat sink clips onto the socket. I've managed to save the day by two methods.
1: Some sockets have a slight gap between itself and the motherboard. Tie a
plastic tie tightly around the base of the socket and through the hole of the
metal clip on the heat sink.
2: A more permenant solution but takes time. Roughen the area on the socket
where the clip would go. Smear a little araolite (not sure of the spelling,
it's epoxy resin available from most diy or car spare shops). Put a weight on
the heatsink clip to hold it down and an elastic band to keep the clip in
position. Smear some more resin on top and 24 hours later it should be
secure. nb Super glue does not work.
I've started with 1: above and then used 2: many months back and the heatsink
assembly is still ok, running non-stop.
3: Perhaps the motherboard needs updating anyway but method 2: is £2 against
£100? in 3:
