Yes, Debian is good for small tight installs. I don't like running production kit on testing/unstable distributions because testing distributions change a lot - that's what they're *supposed* to do, and this sometimes leads to your application busting.

But if you're using stable/woody, then you definitely need to backport a recent v4 MySQL so that you can take advantage of the performance boost against 3.23 versions, get fulltext indexing, and improved replication.

The first time I did this (I *had* to get fulltext indexing into an application I had build), it was a case of backporting a shonky 4.0 alpha; things are a little better these days.
