Glad to hear you've made the decision to at least look at Linux. :-)

I actually wrote an app to decode Outlook mail boxes and provide an import function for a mail client. This was few years ago.
I'd be interested to hear how problematic the transfer is for you, Janet.
IIRC, MS Outlook, at that time at least (2000-2001), encrypted it's mailbox. Via hex dumps it was possible to locate the start of the mail box itself. This empirical evidence was later found to have exceptions of course, but each of those could be countermanded with an update to the code. I am sure TIMTOWTDI :).

This URL shows an XP style windows manager of some sort. I support the suggestion you will be safest trying to transfer the data out of MS Outlook to a more general mailbox format on your XP platform first without involving a transfer to Linux at the same stage. At least then, you'll be copying a mere text file across to wherever you want it to go.
Up until recently I was using thunderbird as my mail agent. I intend to get back to it asap. :)
