Strangley I'm trying to move to Linux after being on Windows and I've got
completely the opposite. Drop in the Xp CD and everything installs fine (1
yr old PC). Install SP2 from CD, install apps, do online update. Everythng
works.
Then I upgrade my SuSe 8.2 to 9.1 (for the bouncy mouse pointers so I can
only blame myself and a clean start as I'd been messing a lot) and on the
first PC everything seems OK (though I've not used it in anger) but my
tablet has no pressure support any more!
I then install the same 8.2 >9.1 on a second PC and all I get is a grub
prompt. 5 retries with different options and still the same!
The good things about this?
Well at least we both have one working PC each!
The local linux group (ie this one) came back to me with possible solutions
for both problems within a day! Would you get that from MS groups? I don't
know I've not used one recently.

(No not that one, the other one!)
