I use Thunderbird at work, why not set-up two accounts in thunderbird say "office" and "roaming" and turn off automatic collection. Then its just a matter of educating the user to select the correct account.

I collect from my Yahoo, my ISP and from my local vpop3 mail server on my windoze machine at work, so it works.
