I've just installed Thunderbird on a new laptop for one of our staff
members. When they are in the office I want them to use our local SMTP
server. When they are out of the office and on dial up I Want them to use
the ISP SMTP relay. They can't see the SMTP relay when on the LAN in the
office (that would have been nice!) Anyone know how I automatically and non
interactively set the SMTP server in Thunderbird so that the user doesn't
have to do anything to get it to switch to the correct server?
You could just set it to always use the ISP smtp relay, and then set up a
transparent smtp proxy on the gateway machine in the office. So any
Internet bound tcp connections on port 25 are redirected to the local smtp
server. This would be even easier if you're smtp server is running on the
gateway machine.
