Maybe think laterally - have split DNS, and resolve to different results
inside and outside the LAN? E.g., 

smtp.chrisjcorp.com 	IN CNAME  	smtp.myisp.net

... for outside the LAN, and ...

smtp.chrisjcorp.com 	IN CNAME	smtp.cjcorp.internal

... inside the lan.

Might not work if you need SMTP Auth or similar, but it's an idea (and
one I've used successfully myself).

The alternative - which is messier - is to setup two profiles, either
two windows users or two thunderbird profiles. This is a pain, though.
