Thanks for the reply - I solved the problem eventually. It seems that the graphical mixers just weren't saving their settings. I resorted to running alsamixer and alsaconf on a console. Intersestingly I stil got no sound until I scrolled right and found the VIA DXF(?) channel set to 0 - pullling the level up on this brought sound to life. I noticed that this option is available on the GUI mixer as well but is off the normal display. 

having gone round a few other distros & found more bugs than  I care to deal with I've done a clean install off MDK 10.1 & withthe exception of a lilo option which had to be changed to sort a non-booting issue all is currently well.
