Re: [Sheflug] via 82xx sound in SuSE 9.1

Hello All,

Just a quick observation re: Mandrake 10.1.

>>My previous system, Mandrake 10.0 (upgraded to 10.1 & found it badly flawed)

We just upgraded the whole of Access Space from Mandrake 10.0 to 10.1 - fresh installs rather than package upgrades (Top tip: always do a fresh install - Mandrake upgrades need de-glitching, and they take longer! As long as you have /home on a seperate directory your data will be safe - you don't have to reformat /home on a fresh install.)

A day or two later we were regretting the decision - several glitches reared their ugly heads. However, simply by adding updates as an software source (http://urpmi.org > easyurpmi) and applying all the available bugfixes...

urpmi --auto-select

... we found that USB storage worked again, and several apps seem to be significantly more stable.

We've now decided not to step back to 10.0 - we much prefer the new version of OpenOffice and Gimp 2.0 installed by default.

HTH,

James
P.S. I just notcied this laptop is still running MDK 10.0... Well, I didn't say I was completely consistent, did I?!

I've seen a lot of threads on getting the via82xx sound module working with the
SuSE 2.6.4 kernel in 9.1 Pro but no-one has actually posted that they had solved
the issue. Has anyone on this list been there & done that? USB hdd support seems
pretty pants too - again, with Mandrake it was totally plug'n'play, SuSE makes
it more like plug'n'grrrr.

My previous system, Mandrake 10.0 (upgraded to 10.1 & found it badly flawed)
detected & used the via sound chip just fine using the same snd_via82xx
module.

I'm seriously thinking about gong back to Mandrake 10.0 & forgetting the hassle.
I used to be a staunch SuSE user but times change.

Can't help you with the sound or HDD problems you're having but have got 9.2 SuSE installed. Have never tried Mandrake but have Ubuntu installed on another box.
I have been with SuSE since 7.3 and suspect that 9.2
*might* be the last SuSE install I have. There doesn't appear to be anything on it I need that I can't get elsewhere.
I'm looking at BSD and Debian platforms these days. Ubuntu provides a single CD Debian based set up - which is a bit quicker to download and install than Debian sarge's 15 CD offering to the masses.
Regards

Lesley
