Can't help you with the sound or HDD problems you're having but have got 9.2 SuSE installed. Have never tried Mandrake but have Ubuntu installed on another box.
I have been with SuSE since 7.3 and suspect that 9.2
*might* be the last SuSE install I have. There doesn't
appear to be anything on it I need that I can't get
elsewhere.
I'm looking at BSD and Debian platforms these days. Ubuntu provides a single CD Debian based set up - which is a bit quicker to download and install than Debian sarge's 15 CD offering to the masses.
