mod_perl is a significant disadvantage, and I say that as someone who
enjoys programming in Perl.
Given a choice I would always use mod_perl. It's a piece of piss to
learn if you know perl well, and much more pleasant to code imo.
I've looked @ mod_perl and php. Yet to use either in anything useful
though.
I prefer mod_perl but php is I think easier for a lot of people to learn
because it's similar in implementation to VB from MS platforms.
mod_perl makes it difficult to host in a number of ways: commercial
mod_perl hosting is thin on the ground for security and performance
reasons, and setting up mod_perl is pretty tough for a lot of people.
I'd like to see these claims substantiated. Did you take a look at the
netcraft site for sites running mod-perl?
I have set up mod_perl within an apache 1.3.x installation on SuSE 8.3.
I followed the documentation and got there. The learning process
helped improve my understanding of the httdp.conf file and uses of
modules in Apache. None of which is useless knowledge.
