Secondly i'm using Thunderbird for my email client. I installed it

I'm sure Thunderbird will be trying to open the link in Firefox or Mozilla which is not installed by default in Kububtu. That's why nothing happens. Can't remember where, there is an option to set up what you want as default behaviour. Under ubuntu it was menu>system

preferences or something similar.

Under Ubuntu it opens up my default web browser (epiphany) by default.
In Ubuntu the default web browser is set by system > preferences >

Do other programs open up URLS when you click on them? IRC or instant
messaging clients for example?

I use Firefox as my browser of choice and also use Thunderbird.

You have to set up Thunderbird to load a browser, this thing didn't work by default on my SuSE 9.2 installation but then neither Firefox nor thunderbird were available by default under that release.

here's something I got by googling for thunderbird + URL

It might help.
