Well, I'm very much a GNOMEr, so I'll just tell you what I like about
the system. In terms of technical features, I don't think there is
anything to choose between them, so it pretty much comes down to a
personal/apps thing. I can say my other half was confused by KDE, but
was able to use Xfce pretty easily, though currently she's on GNOME.
Firstly, I find it a joy to use. I find I don't spend any time fiddling
with it attempting to make it "do what I want", it's fine just the way
it is. It's difficult to define, but the interface is very well thought
it. It's also a vastly nicer environment, IMHO, compared to Windows.
Second, the apps I use: OpenOffice.org, Evolution, Thunderbird, Firefox.
All have great GNOME integration and seem to work together. I took a
look at Konqueror once and it seemed in its own world; plus far too many
buttons and tabs for me. The utility apps (eg., evince for viewing PDFs)
are also really useful.
I don't think I have any KDE stuff around: some people use K3B or
something for burning discs; I've never needed to leave the file
manager.
I know some people want GNOME to be more "customisable"; I don't have
that need which is probably why it doesn't bug me. I prefer having an
environment which basically gets out of my way, especially when doing
programming or stuff at the console.
Cheers,
Alex.
