(2) has not been solved in Thunderbird!  I've just sent myself a test
message containing the line "From Adam"; in Thunderbird it appears as
">From Adam" (the message source has also been modified the same way)
and in the copy (made by ~/.forward) in my webmail it appears as in the
original.

(Interestingly, the copy in Thunderbird's Sent folder also has the extra
">", which it must have added after sending the message.)

I don't know enough to argue about (1) properly, but (2) doesn't inspire me.
