Are you sure about that? It's not your MDA?
I just tried it on my exim + Courier setup, and exim stuffs "From "
lines itself - even though it's delivering into Maildir. If I mangle the
mail manually, my MUAs don't blink - either Evolution, or Thunderbird.
Technically, mbox does require the stuffing. But there's no reason why
_MUAs_ should ever see it.
If an MDA between you and your mailbox is getting it wrong, though,
Tbird will store it wrong no matter what.

I think that sounds like a bug in the storage code, rather than
deliberate mangling.
