Hi this may not be of much help but I have an Epson Perfection 1240U USB
and it has worked fine under Debian for ages. I brought it because the
Sane sight said it was okay[1].
I have just got a single line "usb" in my /etc/sane/epson.conf and then
xsane sees it no problem. I would imagine the 640 should be about the
same. Is it coming up on the USB bus okay? running lsusb should tell you
it has found it. I think that hotplug should create a
device /dev/scanner0 or some such, might want to check in the logs.
Having said that I think that sane uses libusb so should require no unix
devices!
