Yes, that's right.

xsane, though I haven't got as far as using it yet.

Yes, everything is in my favour - except one.

$ sane-find-scanner -q
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8 [EPSON], product=0x010c [Perfection640  ]) 
at libusb:002:002

$ scanimage -L

No scanners were identified.

I think the above answers your question. I've tried both with and without 
hotplug, with no discernible difference.

Graham,
The sane site and other documents refer to "Epson Perfection 640" and quote 
it as a USB device. My device's label says "Perfection 640U". Perhaps 
there's a subtle difference here, in spite of the vendor and product codes' 
being detected.
