Have you tried running this as root to confirm it is not a permissions issue?
I seem to remember a permissions issue which should be fixed now, make sure
your user is in the scanner group too.

I have an Epson Perfection 1660 Photo which works very well on my amd64 Gentoo
workstation. Sorry about not joining in on the thread on gentoo-amd64, really
busy right now and not really following lists very actively...
