No, I don't get this problem with smart.  I have smart on my machine 
as a spare package manager.  I use apt-get which I always use and 
hope to use in future.

No, they installed themselves without me knowing about it.  Fedora 
Core 6.  I've had the same problem on OpenSuSE 10.1 and 10.2.

Yes.  But, trying force doesn't work either.

Tried several different versions of that.

In that case it's a bug in OpenSuSE 10.1 and 10.2 and Fedora Core 6.  
I've even reproduced this in Debian Sarge.
