Agreed.
With multiple NICs in a box, for some reason Debian seems to find them for me
in the reverse order to almost every other distro.
If it was only that simple I could write a quick ifconfig to up and down the
interfaces and assign as I want.
Unfortunately, Debian appears to be in a world of its own and can actually
flip NIC assignment everytime you reboot.
Debian had the old Net3 networking toolkit (net-tools) which allowed you to
force which interface is assigned to which physical NIC.
I think this is now superceded by ifrename.
>From memory, you need to state the mac address in the /etc/mactab with the
interface you need. Whereas ifrename is /etc/iftab
/etc/network/interface should be where to modify ifconfig for starting.
