I would probably agree with that.

Slightly out of left field: given that we burn CDs by destroying part of
the surface area (I think it's a bit like morse code - dit for 0, dash
for 1), why can't we over-write all ones to a CD and physically knacker
the tracks?

That would be a cool project for someone to work on. Doubtless with a
lot of electron microscopy you might be able to figure out which pits
were original, and which were later written, but that's a pretty high
bar really.
