I didn't realize that's how the CD "shredders" worked --- I had assumed
they broke the CDs into bits.

OTOH, I have read somewhere that sanding the shiny stuff off the
label-side of the CD is a good way to destroy the information.  (I tried
it once and it make a heck of a mess.)
