The subnet is the IP addresses that one machine can reach without having
to go through a gateway.

The netmask is binary AND'd with the destination IP. If true then the
destination is on the local subnet so the source machine just transmits
its packet for the destination to pick up; if false then the destination
is outside of the local subnet so the source machine sends the packet to
a gateway on its subnet to route onwards.
