I tend to use aptitude these days, it does seem to be a bit smarter than
plain old apt-get. Plus aptitude tracks packages that are automatically
installed (for dependencies) and removes them when they're no longer
required.
I think most of aptitude's extra functionality was going to be merged into
apt-get, but I'm not sure how much of that actually happened for Lenny.
