I have been after the same thing, to allow booting of small ISO images
for recovery disks etc..

On solution i have done before is unpack them, onto my USB stick and
then set up grub on that stick to load the kernel and initrd from the
directory, its do able, but often systems expect the find stuff on the
CD after the initfs has finsihed...and so fail. Depends on what your
booting.

I am not sure, but I heard a note that grub (or grub2) can do what is
needed however for booting raw iso's.

see
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=774539

I have yet to try it, as I am busy doing stuff, but was going to try later.
