I've just got an Acer Aspire from ebay for £120 for exactly this. I've
put Ubuntu Netbook Remix on with no problems. It's Wifi built in which
works no problem and I've got myself an Orange USB dongle for 3G
access (£5 a month) which took a little extra work to get going under
Linux but was not difficult. I thought something smaller (iphone) but
without a proper keyboard, ssh access was going to be too fiddly, plus
it's a lot more expensive. I think what I've got will solve my problem
of being able to access servers while I'm abroad this summer
